1. Select your food — Use the searchable dropdown to find your food. You can type the name or search by common aliases (e.g., "wings," "fries," "prawns").
2. Choose your options — Select the preparation style (e.g., bone-in vs. boneless), food state (fresh or frozen), and cooking mode (cook or reheat).
3. Review the cooking details — The calculator shows the recommended temperature, time range, preheat instructions, and any shake/flip guidance specific to your food.
4. Start the timer — Hit Start to begin the countdown timer. For multi-stage foods, the timer will pause at each stage transition with a reminder to shake or flip.
5. Check doneness — For meats and poultry, always use a food thermometer to verify the internal temperature has reached the safe minimum before serving.
A thin coat of cooking spray or a light brush of oil on your food helps achieve a golden, crispy exterior — especially for fresh vegetables, breaded items, and homemade fries. Avoid aerosol sprays with propellants that can damage non-stick coatings.
Moisture is the enemy of crispiness. Pat meat and vegetables dry with paper towels before cooking. For frozen foods, there's no need to thaw — the air fryer handles ice crystals well.
Air fryers work by circulating hot air around food. Overcrowding blocks airflow and results in steaming instead of crisping. Cook in batches if needed — the results are worth the extra few minutes.
Shaking the basket or flipping food halfway through cooking ensures even browning on all sides. Our timer will remind you when it's time.
Preheating for 3-5 minutes gives more consistent results, especially for meats and anything you want extra crispy. Some foods like vegetables and reheating don't require preheating.
Air fryers excel at cooking both fresh and frozen foods, but the approach differs:
Important: For raw frozen meats (not precooked frozen items), always verify the internal temperature with a food thermometer before serving.
Air fryers cook food to the same safety standards as conventional ovens. Always verify internal temperatures for meats and poultry using a food thermometer. These are the USDA FSIS minimum safe internal temperatures:
| Food | Min. Temp | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| All Poultry | 165°F (74°C) | Chicken, turkey, duck — all cuts including ground |
| Ground Meats | 160°F (71°C) | Beef, pork, veal, lamb — burgers, meatballs, sausage |
| Beef/Pork/Lamb Steaks & Chops | 145°F (63°C) | Plus 3 minute rest time |
| Fish & Shellfish | 145°F (63°C) | Flesh opaque, flakes easily with fork |
| Leftovers (Reheat) | 165°F (74°C) | All reheated leftovers regardless of food type |
